Ah, the double chin. We get it: a) the name is not super accurate, the official name is actually submental fullness, and b) for those of you who are bothered by a double chin or submental fullness, we totally get how anxiety-inducing it can be, and how self-conscious you can get about it.

Two things to keep in mind though. If you have a double chin that bothers you, you’re truly not alone. 70% of individuals who have submental fullness are just as bothered by it as they are by wrinkles, and the great news is that there are ways that it can be treated effectively these days.

Here are some of our favourite go-to double chin treatments.

FaceTite, the Gold Standard Double Chin Treatment

Our true favourite and gold standard is FaceTite. FaceTite uses radiofrequency (RF) technology sub-dermally or just below the surface of the skin in order to melt fat and tighten the skin: two key things to combatting submental fat. It works by contracting collagen fibres that ultimately tighten lax and sagging skin.

It truly is a fantastic treatment for the double chin and gets the job done. The downside is that it’s semi-invasive, meaning that it does require a little downtime, about 3-4 days until your bruising and swelling subside, and it is generally more expensive than other treatments. But it works and you’ll see your skin beginning to firm up after a week, and your results will only get better and better!

The other great thing is that you only need one treatment and results can last as long as 5 years.

CoolSculpting for the Submental Area

If you are looking for a truly non-invasive option, then we’ll probably recommend CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting kills unwanted fat cells by freezing them. The only thing we’ll say about CoolSculpting and double chin treatment is that the submental area can be tricky to treat with this particular procedure and may not work for everyone.

It could take many treatments before you see results in the submental area with CoolSculpting and not everyone is a candidate (of course, we’ll let you know if this is the case for you!). The thing with CoolSculpting is that we can only achieve a maximum 20% reduction in tissue with each treatment.

In addition, because it takes your body anywhere from 1-4 months to break down and eliminate the fat cells, treatments need to be spaced 4-6 weeks apart and it may take some time to see your results.

Thread Lift and Morpheus8 for Double Chin

Thread lifts can also be a nice option if what you’re looking for is a subtle lift and tightening of the skin just under the chin. Thread lifts involve inserting dissolvable PDO threads just under the surface of the skin in target areas in order to lift the skin. They also stimulate the production of collagen, which will keep your results lasting long after the threads have dissolved.

The important thing to keep in mind with thread lifts as a double chin treatment is that they won’t reduce fat in the area, so if you have more unwanted fat to target then you may want to consider some of the other options we mentioned.

We’ve also been getting good contraction of the tissue with Morpheus8, which combines radiofrequency (RF) heat with deep microneedling. This is a skin tightening and resurfacing treatment, but for double chin treatment we’ll typically combine Morpheus8 with FaceTite.

All this to say that if you’re bothered by a double chin, and whether you have more or less to target in the area, there are a ton of promising options out there. And we’re here to recommend the best option for you and help you make the right decision based on your budget and goals.
