Some of us may always have had an issue with the appearance of our skin, whether it be because of acne or other skin conditions like hyperpigmentation. And many of us may have noticed that skin conditions like these have either appeared or worsened due to the natural aging process.

Maybe your skin is looking a little more deflated now than it did ten years ago, or a little less luminous. You might have a few fine lines here and there that you’re not a big fan of. Basically, if you just want to improve on the way your skin looks overall, or you want to address a number of issues at once, we’ll usually point you in the direction of skin resurfacing.

Simply put, skin resurfacing kicks in the wound healing response in your skin that is so important for healthy skin cell turnover, as well as collagen and elastin production, improving texture to give you even, clear, glowing, younger-looking skin. Not bad, right?

There are a few different types of treatments that “resurface” the skin, and a few different approaches we can take depending on the skin concerns you want to address. Here are some of our favourites.

Morpheus8 for Dramatic Improvements to Skin Texture

If your biggest skin surface issue is with acne, then our newest and favourite treatment for acne skin resurfacing is Morpheus8.

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy, but what’s particularly unique about it is that unlike other RF microneedling treatments it can penetrate the skin much more deeply without damaging the surface of the skin. Microneedling with RF is really a tried and true method of resurfacing the skin and involves sending energy waves to deeper layers of tissue, which assists in the production of new collagen and elastin. A lot of people seek out this type of treatment because it’s been shown to improve wrinkles, acne scarring, and skin laxity.

This is what allows Morpheus8 as a treatment to dramatically improve skin texture. And as it is ablating the tissue, it destroys the bacteria responsible for creating acne. Which is so amazing! So this is by far our number one treatment for acne. Morpheus8 also wildly improves acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, textural issues, sagging skin, and a number of other skin concerns.

And beyond that, Morpheus8 can be used basically anywhere on the body to help firm or remodel the skin. But most commonly, we use it to treat the face because of these amazing qualities that can address so many different concerns at once.

Venus Viva Nano Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Venus Viva Nano Fractional is an ablative nano fractional treatment that is a bit less invasive than Morpheus8. It delivers nano fractional radiofrequency energy via a number of tiny micorabrasions to the skin’s surface. This will again stimulate that important wound healing response that promotes the growth of healthy skin tissue.

What’s great about Viva is that because the tiny pins or microabrasions are so small there’s a lot less downtime and, if you’re a good candidate, you can still expect really fantastic results. With the nano fractional system you’ll see an improvement in the appearance of deep lines, a reduction in pore size, improvements in acne scarring, and a general evening out of textural irregularities.

Whether you are a candidate for the Viva treatment or the Morpheus8 treatment is a decision that you and your provider will make together, based on your goals and skin condition. Consultations at our clinic are always free so you’re welcome to come talk to us about which option is best for what you’re looking to achieve.

Microneedling with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) or PRP

Your third option for skin resurfacing is microneedling treatments with either hyaluronic acid or PRP (platelet-rich plasma). These treatments will improve on the overall appearance of your skin but will particularly target the loss of volume and moisture and will visibly tighten the skin and give it a really nice glow.

Microneedling with HA is really meant to give your skin a huge hydrating boost. Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is already present in your body and it acts as a kind of water retaining sponge that keeps your skin hydrated. Not only does it hydrate, but as a skin resurfacing treatment, microneedling with HA can also correct very specific kinds of fine lines, like the ones that appear from smiling.

Microneedling with PRP is one of the newest skin resurfacing treatments that we offer. You can think of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) as an all-natural alternative to microneedling with HA. Instead of delivering a manufactured product to the skin, this skin resurfacing treatment uses your own plasma, separated from your own blood, in order to promote healthy skin cell and tissue growth, as well as restore lost volume to the skin. What we love about PRP is that it’s the most natural way to improve on the overall quality of your skin. You will truly have a natural glow after this treatment.

If both of these approaches sound good to you (they are!) you can even alternate between them to get a truly amazing result that combines the unique benefits of each.

Your Skin Resurfacing Can Be Totally Customized to You

All of these skin resurfacing treatments work on different levels and intensities and it really depends on what conditions you are looking to treat. The best approach is a custom treatment plan that is totally tailored to your specific goals. Not sure where to start?
