At this point injectable treatments like Botox and filler have become pretty mainstream and possibly even a regular part of your skincare routine, and we love that. We still, however, get a lot of questions on the dos and don’ts following your Botox and/or filler treatment, which is totally understandable since there’s a lot of contradictory information out there.

So we thought it would be good to put together a list of common mistakes to avoid following your injectables treatment to ensure that you end up with the best possible result.

Don’t ask Google, ask us!

After your treatment you’ll be sent home with post-treatment instructions. Make sure to consult those, and if you have any questions or concerns, call or e-mail us right away.

Avoid getting a massage right after injections

As tempting as it might be to book your facial or massage right after your injectables treatment, please don’t. Though it’s pretty rare for filler in particular to migrate, it is possible if there’s consistent repetitive pressure put on the sites where your dermal filler was injected.

Similarly, it’s also best not to massage the treatment area yourself unless specifically instructed to do so by your injector as this can actually worsen your bruising or swelling and irritate your skin. In some cases, your injector may recommend rubbing the treated area in order to smooth out lumps, but this is very specific to the treatment you’re receiving and typically not required with Botox and most filler treatments.

Don’t lie down for the first few hours after getting injectables

You want to avoid lying down for about the first four hours after your treatment—especially with Botox—to avoid any product migration and also to minimize the risk of additional bruising.

To drink or not to drink?

We love our glass of wine over here at MD Beauty Clinic as much as the next person, so we’ll tell you the good news. You don’t need to decline a glass of wine because you’re getting a Botox or filler treatment or because you just had a treatment.

There is so much hype these days around drinking alcohol and getting Botox or filler treatments. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not saying to go get wasted before or after your treatment (that’s probably never the best idea), but here’s the real deal: drinking alcohol leading up to your treatment may make you more prone to bruising, but typically this tendency to bruise is more genetic than anything else.

So, seriously, don’t overthink it. If you’re going for a nice dinner the evening before or of your treatment, a glass of Chardonnay isn’t going affect your result.

Don’t hit the gym immediately after Botox or filler treatments

You might be a bit of a cardio junkie, but maybe just take the day off from an intense fitness session the day of your scheduled treatment. Your product won’t necessarily migrate while you’re doing those jumping jacks, but your heart rate will increase and your blood pressure will rise, increasing the risk of swelling and bruising that you want to avoid. It’s just one day, you can give yourself permission to take a break ☺.

And if you really feel the need to move, a brisk walk never hurt anyone.

Don’t suntan after injections

The warmer days are slowly but surely approaching, and we get it, you might be dying for some much needed vitamin D, but we’re always very careful about overexposure to the sun, especially after an injectables treatment.

Unfortunately, unprotected exposure to the sun can increase redness, swelling, and bruising around the treated area, so if you know you’re going to be out in the sun, just be sure to put on a quality SPF lotion to protect that beautiful skin and a nice big sun hat. And as a rule of thumb, we highly recommend you always do this, not just after an injectables treatment.
