- Why I Got Vaginal PRP Treatments
Vaginal laxity is a highly overlooked issue that a large number of women face. Many women just accept it as a normal part of the aging process or as an inevitable part of giving birth, but also because we haven’t had many options to address it, aside from surgery. Vaginal laxity can cause undue discomfort and anxiety in a woman’s daily life causing urinary incontinence as well as a diminishment in physical sensation during intercourse.
The natural aging process, menopause, the strain of childbirth, weight and hormone fluctuations, can all be contributing factors to the stretching and weakening of vaginal tissue, which results in vaginal laxity. At MDBC we offer two types of vaginal tightening treatments that address a myriad of issues caused by vaginal laxity.
BOOK AN APPOINTMENTWe offer PRP/PRF for vaginal tightening. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) / PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is a natural option for vaginal tightening where plasma and fibrin are extracted from an individual’s blood and re-injected into target areas of the vagina. PRP/PRF is known for a number of rich growth elements. When strategically injected, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the body and promotes healthy new skin cell turnover, this in turn improves on overall sensation and the ability to orgasm, reduces pain during intercourse, as well as improves on mild urinary incontinence.
We also offer Votiva for vaginal tightening. Votiva involves a handheld device that emits radiofrequency (RF) energy to the labia, vulva, and vagina. This technique generates heat beneath the skin’s surface to tighten tissues without surgery or causing damage. It not only tightens the skin but also boosts protein production, enhancing elasticity. This strengthened skin barrier helps alleviate symptoms of vaginal laxity, dryness, urinary incontinence, and reduced sexual satisfaction.
With PRP/PRF your provider will start by taking a vile or two of blood from your arm. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge for several minutes. During this time, you’ll be given local anesthetic so that you feel no discomfort during the treatment. Once platelet-rich plasma and/or platelet-rich fibrin has been extracted from your blood your MD provider will strategically inject it into targeted areas of the vagina (for example, the clitoris, vaginal wall, urethra) depending on the needs that you are looking to address. The injections themselves only take about 10-15 minutes the total procedure taking approximately 45 minutes to an hour, primarily due to the time that it takes to extract PRP/PRF. Most people feel some slight pressure, but no pain during the treatment.
Votiva similarly takes around 45 minutes to complete. During the treatment, your provider will use specialized equipment to deliver the RF energy to the targeted areas. This technology uses gentle, controlled radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat vaginal tissues, which enhances collagen production and blood circulation, leading to tighter and more elastic tissue.
No special preparation is required for these treatments. We recommend that you undergo these treatments after your menstrual cycle has ended. If you are coming in for a PRP/PRF vaginal treatment we recommend that you drink plenty of water before your appointment so that we can extract a good amount of blood. For Votiva we advise you remove any hair around the treatment area prior to your appointment; preferably through shaving as opposed to waxing or chemical removal.
There is essentially no recovery time following these treatments and most women feel comfortable going back to work or going on with their daily activities immediately following the treatment.
Your first step is to book an in-person complimentary consultation with one of our doctors in order to discuss which treatment option will best address your particular needs.
Generally anyone who feels they have vaginal laxity or are experiencing mild to moderate urinary incontinence can undergo this procedure. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should wait until afterwards to have either of these treatments.
You should not have PRP/PRF if you have a low platelet count, an active infection in the area, a blood or bleeding disorders, or if you’re on any “anti-clotting” medications (like Aspirin and other blood thinners).
Similarly, you should not have Votiva if you’re on blood thinners. This treatment is also not suitable for individuals with bleeding disorders or conditions that could impair healing. If there is an active condition (infection, rash, lesion, etc.) in or near the treatment area, it is necessary to wait until it has fully resolved before proceeding with Votiva.
For PRP/PRF vaginal treatment many women feel an improvement in sexual sensation very soon following treatment, but full results tend to come into effect about a month following treatment, once the collagen and new skin cell tissue has had time to build up. For PRP/PRF you may need one additional treatment about two months following your initial treatment, after that we recommend once yearly maintenance treatments.
For Votiva vaginal treatment, many women experience improvements immediately after the initial session, but for the best results, a series of treatments is often advised. These are most effective when spaced out, as the skin and muscle of the vaginal walls may become desensitized to frequent treatment. We recommend one procedure every 4-6 weeks, for up to three treatments total.
This depends on which treatment you are getting and on your individual needs. Most women necessitate only one PRP/PRF treatment, and up to three Votiva treatments, however for some women a yearly maintenance treatment could be recommended. Whether or not you need more than one treatment will be discussed during your complimentary consultation with one of our MD providers.
Most patients do not experience any side effects, though we do recommend that you abstain from sexual intercourse for 5 days following PRP/PRF, and 3 days following Votiva.
With PRP/PRF you may have some spotting and feel a little full or swollen in the area, but these symptoms subside very quickly post treatment. With Votiva you might experience slight redness or swelling after treatment, but this usually subsides within a few hours.
For PRP/PRF treatments, because plasma and fibrin are extracted directly from the patient the treatment is also extremely safe and carries absolutely no risks of allergic reaction.
Votiva has been approved by Health Canada and shown to have little to no risk.
A consultation with our specialist RN will help you to understand which treatment is best for you.
Generally, if you are experiencing more than one concern such as mild incontinence along with dryness, laxity or pain during sex, then we may recommend combined therapies. For those interested in improving the look of the vagina or are curious about improving sexual sensation without any additional concerns to address with treatment, Votiva may be the optimal treatment for you.
I have been attending for close to 10 years now. I started with the M10 skincare and peels and eventually grew into needing/wanting some Botox injections. Everything you need in one spot. I’m a mom and a woman in finance, so my schedule is brutal. I love that I don’t have a preference for one nurse - all of them are super capable and professional. I’m happy to get in with whoever, whenever. I can’t recommend this clinic enough to my friends and family.”
