There’s much to be said about the eyes. Poets, painters, and writers have pondered and reflected on these ‘windows to the soul’ for ages, and we too focus a lot on eyes in our daily lives. Besides their awesome physiological functions, eyes play a crucial role in non-verbal communication.

As such, addressing issues like dark circles or hollowness under the eyes (also commonly referred to as tear troughs) is a popular concern in the cosmetic industry.

It’s All in the Eyes

Tear troughs are the depressions that form between the lower eyelid and the upper part of the cheek. These hollows can be caused by various factors, including age, genetics, and lifestyle. As we age, we lose volume in our skin. This is especially noticeable in our faces. The fat pads throughout our visage–buccal fat, under eye fat–diminishes over time resulting in a sunken appearance and the formation of dark circles.

Eyes are a particularly complex area to work with, given their sensitivity and critical roles in our bodies. It’s important to be mindful of any foreign substances that may be introduced to the area around the eyes because the skin tends to be thin and delicate in this region. Cue: PRF/PRP treatments.

Healing Me, Through… Me!

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) have emerged as innovative and effective non-surgical solutions to rejuvenate the tear troughs. PRF/PRP are described as revolutionary treatments that harness the body’s natural healing abilities. Sounds like magic!

A quick bio lesson for you. Our blood is made up of four key components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Each player has a distinct role, but they generally work together as a team.

In PRF/PRP treatments a small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn and it’s put into a super cool machine that spins super fast and separates the platelets and plasma from the other good stuff. The biological material is collected and reintroduced to the targeted area–in this case the tear troughs.

The platelets contain growth factors that stimulate collagen production → promoting tissue repair and regeneration. When platelets are extracted, they have a concentrated healing effect. It’s basically sorcery.

What are the Advantages of PRF Injections?

When applied to the under-eye area, PRF can effectively reduce dark circles, improve skin texture, and restore volume. There are a few great things about platelet-rich fibrin treatments.

Non-surgical and minimally invasive: This treatment requires no incisions or anesthesia, making it safer and more comfortable than surgical options. Just one prick to extract blood–much like you do when getting blood work done–and then a subsequent prick to each tear trough. Easy peasy, plasma squeezy.

Promotes natural results: PRF promotes the body’s natural healing processes, resulting in gradual and natural-looking improvements in the under-eye area. You’re also using your own biological material, so your body is familiar with the substance and won’t act out to receiving it. Which leads me to…

Reduced downtime: Compared to surgery, the recovery period for PRF treatments is significantly shorter, with most patients able to return to their daily routines right after treatment. Again, your body is less likely to reject or react adversely to its own material, and the minimal invasiveness and non-surgical nature of PRF/PRP makes it super convenient.

Long-lasting results: While individual results may vary, many patients experience the benefits of PRF treatments for several months to a year. I had a coworker who claimed that she’s still benefiting from the procedure years after having it. Like I said, sorcery!

Versatility: You know how much we love to mix and match procedures when appropriate. PRF can be used in combination with other cosmetic treatments to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Could PRF under the eye be right for me?

PRF treatments for tear troughs are a remarkable addition to the cosmetic industry. These non-surgical, natural methods offer a safe and effective solution to rejuvenate the under-eye area reducing the appearance of dark circles, hollows, and fine lines.

As the demand for tweakments, or minor enhancements, continues to rise, PRF are poised to become an integral part of the journey towards achieving a more youthful and refreshed appearance. They have the added benefit of avoiding the risks and lengthy downtime associated with surgery, and some of the concerns associated with using external fillers.

As always, when considering PRF for tear trough treatment, it’s essential to work with a qualified and experienced practitioner. This is a sensitive area and you don’t want to take unnecessary risks. Remember that your eyes are unique and beautiful, and enhancing their allure with PRF can be a transformative and confidence-boosting experience.
